I have a Bantam Cochin, just over a year old. Seems she's been broody for quite a while. Last week I noticed she had what appeared to be mite eggs on the feathers under her beak. Treated her and the others with Sevin dust.
Today as i was checking under her for eggs, I felt and observed a fleshy mass on her breast with no feathers on it. It is about the size of a golf ball. Any ideas?

She's plucking herself to line her nest for the upcoming babies. You will see broody hens pluck most of the feathers from their belly and underside. Those birds are your truly dedicated broodies.

You are going to need to retreat the birds within 2 weeks after the first treatment to get any eggs that may have hatched in the interim. Don't forget to clean and treat the coop as well.

My larger concern is that it's not just a bare spot. It is a large, protruding lump.

Ok, i'm doing some research in that direction.. I'm taking all suggestions! Thanks!

Is it her crop? Broodies only leave the nest just long enough to gorge themselves on feed/water and poop a massive amount. They also tend to lose weight while broody making the crop appear larger than normal against the rather skinny backdrop.

Ok! Should it resolve itself? Or do you have any treatment suggestions?

You just need to make sure it is emptying properly. The way to do that is to check its size before she eats in the morning. It should empty at night and be almost flat in the morning before she eats. If that's what is happening, then she is OK.
