This year the flies are really bad!!
Does anyone have suggestions on how to keep them down in the coop and run?
I clean it regularly and have fly traps. But the flies are still in the hundreds in there everyday. (I also have fly traps on the outside and around the house)

Keep everything as dry as possible and remove the nightly poop load and put it in a container with a lid. Do you use poop boards? Are the fly traps AWAY from the coop and run?

I use permethrin. I was spraying my coops originally for mites but there was also a lot of flies. I did my weekly treatments for the mites and it also eliminated the flies. This is what I used. I put poultry dust in my nest boxes. There is no egg withdrawal period with permethrin. Good luck...

I have a platform under the roosting bars. I had the fly away from the coop and scattered all around the house and the flies were still there so I put one in the coop hoping they would go to that.

I use that same spray and will spray multiple times throughout the summer. It keeps the flies down for about a day and that’s it.

I sprinkled lime (and layer it with the poop when I scrape down the boards). I had good luck with old fashioned fly paper - the sticky yellow spiral kind. I have to change it frequently but its working much better than the traps did for me.

I live in Florida and it has been a hot and rainy summer and we are inundated with flies. I read everything I could find on how to control them and tried flytraps, fly paper, everything and anything. The absolute BEST way I have kept flies down to a minimum...4 1gallon ziploc bags with 4-5 pennies in each - may need more if you have a large coop/run, tied with twine and hung so they catch the sun and chickens can't get to them. The working theory is that the flies think it's a big multi-eyed predator and avoid them. I would not have believed this if you told me it worked, but desperation for ridding the coop and run from these nasty pests had me trying it. My husband and I were flabbergasted when we hung them and the flies just disappeared. I have had them up for about a month now and they have made cleaning/feeding/hanging with the chickens a MUCH nicer interlude. It won't get rid of every fly, but about 95% of them. Hope this helps

I second this method. Learned about the penny water bag trick from a seafoood vendor along the coast. Thought he was crazy until I tried it on my back door where the kids would contantly leave the door open during the summer. Works like a charm.
