I'm starting a new thread because the last thread I could find on this subject was in 2011. I was reading a lot of the threads on the subject and it seemed that this test is extremely accurate. It was my understanding from what I was reading that it was a bona fide way to test your eggs. I had also candled my eggs and listened and didn't hear any sounds or see any movement. When I tested my eggs all floated except 2. I retested those 2 (3 times) and every time they sank. I have read other threads that said that if an egg has a dead chick it could explode and contaminate the other eggs. I am hatching my first hatch in my incubator and currently have 2 chicks that hatched today in there so I was scared this would happen. I decided to open the egg and see. When I opened the air pocket there was still no sound or movement so I moved the membrane fully expecting to see a dead chick or rotten chick. To my horror, there was a baby chick that was alive and moving, but my moving the membrane had caused it to bleed to death. I tried to put it under a heat lamp but it had lost far too much blood there was nothing I could do but keep it as comforable as possible and watch it die. I am absolutely horrified and feel horrible. I am sharing this story because I don't want this little angel's death to be in vein. I know that I have learned my lesson and will never trust a test again and will follow my gutt instinct. I'm sure this test may be accurate a lot of the times (from what I have read by other posters in other threads it has a huge success rate), but it is that small percentage of error that doesn't make it worth while for me. Obviously everybody can decide for themselves, but I wanted to share my story so that people know there is a chance that the test is wrong and no other baby chicks will have to die needlessly. I can't bring back this little baby, and I am so sorry that I intereferred, I was trying to look out for the health of my two newborn chicks and my other eggs and thought (based on the test) that the egg was a threat to their health or I never would have touched it. Has anybody else had a similar experience.
