i know this may sound stupid , but we were told not to put a floor in our coop by someone with chickens.. my grandparents i dont think had a floor either.. but im sort of thinking a floor is a good idea to keep them more dry and protection from predators.. any thoughts on the subject ? floor or no floor?

I am building a coop for a friend right now and this debate is raging between me and his brother. I say yes a floor is fine, plus will make it easier to clean out. He says no because the mice will live under it, I say the mice were already in there with no floor when I cleaned it out. I also say that they will be drier and warmer and safer from predators. Remember if you were to buy a coop they come with a floor, so do chicken tractors. I say go for the floor, I feel it is very practical for yourself and the chickens.

Many coops in the old days were big and housed many chickens so flooring was impractical. Today backyard coops are generally smaller and benefit from some type of floor to keep predators from tunneling into the coop and to keep things dry and clean. You can always have a built-up floor of bedding material to keep it high and dry but you will be pushing around the bedding to fill holes where the chickens like to scratch down to look for bugs or find a place for a dirt bath. A wood floor is not essential but really nice to have!

A floor would be best if you want something easy to clean and predator proof. Although leaving out the floor will give chickens something to scratch at while inside their coop.

My grandparents housed chickens in half a barn so their floor was just dirt. They also were not pets and a loss there and again was really no big deal for them. Grandma frequently made chicken noodles with any trouble making chickens. Me however, I'm going to protect my chickens in any way I can so I did not leave my coop on the ground. The outside siding goes all the way down but the floor itself is about 1.5ft up (bottom of entry door)
