My 4.5 YO RIR hen has fly strike. I cleaned her and put vetrycin spray on. She's in a crate in the house until she heals. She has eaten and drank water and electrolytes. She screamed bloody murder when I went to soak her, but I think I got all the maggots out. The red spot is of concern. It looks deep.

What are my next steps?
Keep soaking a couple times a day?
Use triple antibiotic ointment on the wound?

I don't want to lose her. Thank you!

It looks like there still may be maggots in the wound. I would repeat the warm soaks several times a day until not more hatch out. Salt, 8 tsp per gallon of warm water, is very good to use as a soak, or you can add a bit of Dawn to warm water. Do you know if she had a poopy vent, a prolapsed vent that got pecked by the other chickens, or what happened? It kind of looks like a prolapse. I would spray the wound with a wound spray or apply plain Neosporin triple antibiotic ointment to the wound.

She almost always has a poopy butt. I didn't notice it right away this time as one of my other hens was ill and passed. (The barred rock with the "Gout". It must have been that virus that finally killed her.) This hen has not laid an egg in a long long time.

Thank you for the information and confirming the soaks. I'll keep a close eye on those maggots.

I've got Permectrin II insecticide spray concentrate. I wounder if I can use that.

She is feeling better and better after each soak.
Thank you so much!
