Never knew your girl has spurs!

Her wound is healing! You are doing a great job! And yes, I have seen people (on BYC) use neosporin on large wounds as well. Most people describe it as "slathering" it on. I am guessing that it keeps the wound moist, but @Wyorp Rock should know what to do with her. She seems to be recovering well though!

Our girl's wound was on her back, between her wings. It may not have been that big, hard to tell from the pics, hers was about 2x2", but in some places was quite deep and also extended up under the skin, where the maggots had gotten in. It was pretty ugly and my first instinct was to cull the poor girl immediately. But I girded up my heart, remembering some of the wounds I'd seen here and how so many chickens had survived with good care. The first week we didn't really seem to see much improvement. The second week, though, the margins of the wound looked better and started to heal and close up. Then, pretty quickly it seemed the wound grew smaller from the outer margins toward the center. At the end of the third week her feathers, which we had clipped, had pretty much grown over the wound and covered it from sight, and it was almost entirely closed up. We put her outside with two other hens in the "infirmary," which is also sometimes a brooder or bachelor pad, and a week later put her back into general population, where she's doing fine. Neosporin is wonderful stuff, chickens are amazing critters, and @Wyorp Rock won't steer you wrong!

Time for a happy update! My sick girl made it through 7 days of ACS treatment - crop much better, no more vent gleet and her flystrike wound is really healing. She is not like a spring chicken - but rebounding nicely. I will not be surprised if she does not live for years…but I’m so grateful to this group for walking me through it all! We saved her from flystrike!

I put blue wound spray to seal her wound and she is back in the coop. Her single flock mate leaves it alone. She had trouble making it up to the roost so we built her a ramp. I’m happy she’s living her best chicken life
