Food Dish

My new flock of chickens waste so much food and make a huge mess! I'm not sure why this is happening. I've watched them and they peck at it (eating it) and continue to toss it out of the dish while they're eating. I've tried placing it up on a higher surface, but the same thing happens. Any suggestions?

Buy a proper feeder that has a narrow opening that they can't have room to flick things or remove the feeder and make them eat their spilled feed.
Are you mixing anything into the feed?

Are they young? Mine did the same thing when they were young pullets! They grew out of it later but I learned to hang the feeders about chest high and that helps a lot! And yes I would remove feeders and let them eat that up or remove it because you don’t want it to mold

I use a feeder like that for the brooder. To help contain the spillage, I put the feeder inside a pie pan. Then I can dump the billed out food back into the feeder.

Thank you for your input. I can always count on BYC members for great advice! They are a new flock of assorted bantams and while I know a few are young pullets I'm not entirely sure about all of them. There are nine hens total. I ordered a waste free feeder and it arrives tomorrow so hopefully the problem will be solved. And I do not add anything to the feed. It is just All Flock crumbles. Thank you again!
