My chickens are currently just on layer ration and food scraps. Should I get something else for extra fat/energy for winter? Oats, barley, grain? Or should I just get some scratch? FYI - I have a new coop that's very ventilated. The only heat is their waterer on top of an upside down heated bucket.

I've read on here that black oil sunflower seeds (in the shell) are good to give them because they're very fattening, to give some extra calories for keeping warm. Throw them out like scratch and let the birds pick around for them.

Better yet, feed an all flock ration like Flock Raiser, and some scratch, and oyster shell on the side. If you aren't adding extra hours of lighting, your birds will be laying fewer eggs, and not need as much calcium per day. Mary
