Food/Water Placement

Waterers out in the run are more convenient and more sanitary if your coop is small.
That said, we have chickens that free range in the afternoons, our coop is 12x12 for 12 fowl, with a dirt floor.. the front is wire from 2.5ft up.
We keep a waterer in there for them, too. Some days the weather is too nasty for them to be out,(pouring rain or wind storms). We only have one feeder in there(for bad days) but I usually feed them outside.
Wet mash balls plopped onto clean ground is mostly what they get.

I put feed in bowls outside every morning, and it gets removed/cleaned every night so it won't attract varmints. There is a big overhang on the coop and a tarp can be rolled down in front of that, so it almost always stays dry.
There have been mice in the coop, so I never leave it in there.
I agree, I rather feed them 3 or 4 times a day in small amounts than have left over food attract varmints.
