Hey ya'll - it's been a LONG while since I have logged on to BYC...been crazy busy farming :p

Woke up this morning, went about my normal routine and when I got to the geese, my male has something wrong with his foot!

There is a GIANT blister of blood between the bones, in the webbing of his foot. He was perfectly fine last night at 10 before I came in for the evening. Today he can barely walk on it, is much calmer than normal, and it is slightly warm in that leg, from the first joint down to the web of his foot.

He is a 3 - 4 month old cotton patch goose....So far this is the best pic I can get one handed holding him and the camera...I can try for more.

I cleaned out a baby pool, brought him up to the house, and he is floating in fresh water right now at least.

It looks like a giant blood blister, that's the best way to describe it. I don't know what to do next...there is ONE TEENY TINY little place where it looks like it is leaking blood...I mean TINY! Like perhaps he was stung - not even big enough for a needle to prick it. But maybe that's just the pressure> I dunno....

I'm lost, I need help, he's such a good goose, I only want him better :( Someone tell me what you would do next...lance it and drain it? Dress with bluekote? UGH! Someone let me know what you would do and thanks in advance! I still lurk here and read...I just don't have a lot of time to log in and write anymore :(

Okay - walked out to sit with him and got a better shot:

Breathing also looks a tad labored...is it stress or did he get stung perhaps?

Still can't see it real well, but about a month ago my gander had the soft pad under his foot swell up and I am pretty sure he stepped on a bee, I soaked his foot and he soaked me every night for about a week in warm Epsom salt water, finally the swelling went down, he didn't have labored breathing though. But depending on the type of sting may cause more issues. I used a 3 gallon bucket and stood him in it, you don't want him to drink the water ES works as a laxative.

Thank you, but he has passed - pretty sure it was a scorpion - walked their goose yard very well several times today and found one out there lurking. I'm gonna bet it had a part in this - killed it with a shovel, but it doesn't fix things. Now I have one lonely female and need to decide what to do...she's miserable already looking for him and lord knows its not goose season anymore...so sad tonight :(

Oh I hate to hear that your lost the goose. So sorry and glad you found the scorpion and disposed of it. You just never know just what will happen with our geese when it comes to different area's that we all live in. Different states brings different predators of some sort.
We just disposed of a Raccoon coming up to our place and into the garage opening bags of our feed but sooner or later would have went for the geese. They always do!!!
Again sorry for you loss. Try on here or craigslist to see if you can find a companion. Good luck!

Sorry for your loss. You might try Tom Walker for another cotton patch. There is a cotton patch group who may be able to have one available. Good luck and again sorry.

just got home from vacation and 3 of ten young fully feathered goslings had black feet and trouble walking. They were eating and drinking fine so I decided it was from some kind of injury. They are kept in a pasture with sheep and frequently go into the sheep pen to escape the heat. Cheviot sheep are very flighty and when frightened they stampede like wild animals. The geese were getting better every day, so I thought everything was ok. Noticed yesterday that the skin between their toes was actually dead and starting to fall off, leaving them with no webbing. Other then looking like chicken feet, they are fine. Just wondered if anyone else has had this happen or just me.

Never seen this but wondering if stepping in manure could have caused burning of their feet? I would wash their feet good in some Epsom salt water and keep them in clean bedding in shade till healed.
