For the love of eggs

Welcome aboard from a fellow Buckeye..and possibly very close neighbors..hehe. I would look around on Facebook Marketplace and/or Craigslist for a better suited coop for your flock, but keep the Omlet to use as an emergency coop to quarantine new/sick/bullying hens/roosters, or as a grow-out coop for younger birds.

Welcome!

Most important things to keep in mind when designing a coop for winter are 1. Space as they will be spending more time inside than usual and that can make birds more testy with each other (you want 4sqft of coop space per bird) and 2. Plenty of draft free ventilation. You want at least a square foot of ventilation per bird but more is better especially if it gets very hot. If you don't have enough ventilation moisture can build up in the coop and cause frostbite. It is not the cold itself that's a problem in winter, it's the moisture. Unfortunately omlet coops aren't the best coops in this regard as they are small with poor ventilation. They work best in very mild climates for very small flocks that get along well in close confinement but even then they aren't great
I found a coop that’s 8x10. It is going to be delivered in the next day or two. It isn’t painted so I would like to know if it’s a good idea to paint the inside as well as the outside? If yes what paint is best?

The outside is an absolute must to protect it from the elements. I like having the inside painted as well as it just makes it a little bit brighter. You will need to use a high quality exterior grade paint.

I wish I would have looked around more when buying a coop. What sold me on Omlet was the fact that they were so easy to clean and weren't suppose to harbor any bugs. All that sounded wonderful. I didn't want a big flock so it all seemed like the perfect coop. Now that I have read more articles about raising chickens I regret buying it.
I’ve posted a link to an article about how to best use your Omlet coop. Good luck with it!

8x10 sounds perfect! And I agree with dobbielover, paint is a good idea at least for the outside and possibly for the inside too (don't pick a light color for the interior though as the walls will inevitably get messy and light colors will show that more). Do post pictures after you get it and feel free to ask any questions you might have about it! Everyone would be more than happy to help

Ours are cedar so don't need paint but hubby is painting them anyway to match the house, with the exterior house paint.

For the inside of all of our coops, we get a high-quality kitchen/bathroom paint in white. Their dander will make it off-white. It washes nice for whenever you want to.
