Just wondering what would be best for the run/outside part. Our coop does have a roof over the run but we want to fill the bottom with something because we have hardware cloth on the bottom, so we're not sure what to fill it up. Any recommendations/tips? Thanks!

I don't think that shavings will work in the run too well. They would get wet and the wind will blow them everywhere. Mine is just sandy soil. Drains ok but can be a mess in the rain. Pure sand would drain better.

I just added sod to my run and so far it is great, not sure how long it will last though. Sand sounds like a cheaper and better long term option.

I have been using pine shavings, it is inexpensive breaks down well and keeps the chickens busy. I just place the bale sans plastic in the center and let them have at it.
