During the winter we had a bad mice problem but my dad got most of them. So yesterday I went out to the silkie pen and in the middle of the coop was a pink thing. At first I thought, "Oh no, they have blood in their feces! What am I going to do?!!" As I got closer, I realized that it was a newborn mouse just laying there all alone in the middle of the coop. It was alive, so being the person that I am, I scooped it up and brought it inside. We once had to raise newborn voles before so I had a good idea of what to do. I have it on a heating pad set on Low with nesting material. Every 1 1/2 hours I have to feed it puppy formula with a paint brush and rub its tummy. So wish me luck, and keep this little one in your prayers. It's brand spank'n new with no hair and eyes still closed.... I would guess that it was only hours old when I found it. I have no idea whether it's a field mouse, house mouse, or wood mouse. I just hope that it makes it!

You are much kinder than me... I would have handed it over to the chickens to eat. I'm surprised that they hadn't done that already.

I could never do that personally. I always keep formula and first aid stuff for wild animals on hand, because you never know.... Last year we raised a crow and eventually brought it to a sanctuary since it's illegal to keep crows. Oops:lau The silkies aren't the brightest, not to mention that they can barely see with all their fluff. So I'm not too surprised that they didn't even notice the mouse.

A crow? That had to have been an amazing experience!

I've taken in and cared for lots of orphaned critters both wild and domestic. I have had squirrels, raccoons, a baby fox, a set of twin deer, more kittens and puppies than I can remember; and lots of bottle lambs, calves and kids...I have even saved a couple of King snakes from becoming pig snacks before. I draw the line at mice though.

Oddly enough, I did at one time have a few pet fancy rats.

Now this is interesting. :D Do you have any pics?
Here's a picture

Yes, I've had some fancy and dumbo rats too. They actually made some great pets. They have a lot of personality! Wow, the fox and deer twins must have been quite the experience! We once saved a injured chipmunk and were able to release it back into the wild. But it still comes by to say hello!

I would so do the same thing. I have multiple containers for different injured or lost baby species, whether it be birds, frogs or toads. A mouse would surely find itself included on my list.

Rats and mice actually make good pets. I would get them over hamsters or gerbils.

Hope the little guy or girl makes it
