I have a Peahen that has shown up at my house today. She insisted she was supposed to be in my coop and she spent the day trying to figure out how to get in & eating in my garden. I was at work all day, my husband kept an eye on her. When I got home, I let her in and then moved her to a coop with just 2 Marans hens in it. She's made friends with them already and seems happy to be in the yard now. We have no idea where she may have come from. If we don't find her owner, she's welcome to stay. So what do I need to feed her? What does she need for a roost and nest? I have no idea how to care for one of these... Can someone tell me what color she is? Thanks!

Congratulations!
She's a very pretty girl!
Looks like an India Blue to me, but the experts will probably let you know.

In the meantime, at the top of the Peafowl forum, you'll see a link to the stickies...
They are a great source of all kinds of information about peas, please take a look!

Nope, we are several hours from there. No leg bands or ID that I could find. But thanks for checking! I feel like someone is missing her. She seems to be in great condition.

She's a beautiful india blue hen :) You will find most of the info (if not all of the info) on basic care inside the sticky index. If you still have questions after that, feel free to ask here and we'll do our best to answer them! Congrats on your awesome new kid!

It seems there are a few people who found a pea lately... Maybe folks who are losing their homes are dropping them off? Or a peafowl fairy giving out peas to deserving people? I still think you need to get a peacock to go with her.

Most likely, people are losing them to pens breaking in the storms that have been moving across the US. I know that our pen gate busted in one early this year, and all mine got out. Luckily they were good birds and came back into their pens on their own to roost that evening, but I can imagine someone who hasn't hand raised theirs or who just got new peas having a harder time of it.

I don't know that I need a project as big as she is but they sure are pretty! And on storms, we did the night before she showed up have storms in the area, mostly lightening and thunder here. From what I have read, they are very noisy but we have never heard anything like them around here. She's been quiet so far. Made some low clucking sounds last night before dark. I sure hope she puts herself to bed tonight, I don't want to pick her up again. I would have left her alone last night but when she flew up into the netting I had to help her. Put her in the coop on a roost and she was there last time I checked last night. She's walking the yard with the Marans hen now.
