Last Thursday my hubby and I were out target shooting on our range and low and behold this GSH Pointer shows up. I have never seen a dog try and figure out what the heck we were shooting at so much in my entire life. Fearless this dog was. She stood just a foot under our targets and she was like "what are you hitting?" while we were shooting. Today, 4 days later she is still here and noone in a 100 mile radius has claimed her.

I have had hunting dogs in the past and have vowed to never have another. I lost a female beagle a year and a half ago and to this day it makes me cry. She was my baby girl (not a hunter) and it broke my heart the circumstance at which we had to put her down. Can't get into it. However, now this dog is here, a female, sweet as ever, and I find myself thinking that noone can give her a better home than me, but torn because I don't want to go through the heartache again, which I surely will because every day that we have had her, she has ran off and I'm left with that pit in my stomach. Some will know what that "Pit" is and some won't. Of course she comes back, but I can't put my heart into her knowing that she'll take off after the first winged thing that she sees!

I have contacted shelters in all surrounding counties as well as the turkey/deer check stations. No luck. This girl eats hardly anything. I can only get her to eat Milkbones or table food. Any advice?? Again, I cannot...no, will not keep her. I don't want to take her to my local shelter as it is a kill shelter. If I do, she will have 17 days to adopt out. But I'm still too torn over losing my Maddie. Any suggestions? Anything I've missed as far as finding the owner? She had no tags on her. She seems to have had a litter or two-she may have been used for breeding and tossed aside...idk....

I took her to my local vet and he said that she was NOT microchipped and did not look familiar. That these dogs were far and few between.

I had posted this thread under random ramblings, but it was suggested that I post it here.

Any suggestions??

Maybe try craigslist?? See if anyone on there will take her? I dont know... but i WOULD bring the dog to be put to sleep before i sent her to a shelter..

There are plenty of GS rescues out there, try to google for it. I would contain her and not let her run off, something bad will happen, until you can find her a place. I have five gs right now and will probably never own another breed (I train all breeds, hunting). Since you have checked for a chip, you have done about everthing you can to find an owner. Contact rescue, or try to find a home if you don't want to keep her yourself, she may grow on you though.

your fear is pretty easy to deal with - contain her and don't let her roam as she pleases.
As for contacting rescue, they are staffed by volunteers so it's not unusual for it to take several days for them to get back to you. Especially if some of that time is a weekend. They are people with full-time jobs and families outside the time they donate to the dogs.

I would also contact any GSP breeders in your area and ask them for help. It is possible that they know someone who would like an older dog vs a puppy who could give this girl a great home. ESPECIALLY if she seems hunt trained.

I would expand your search on petfinder. Dogs can wander farther than you think. It's unlikely that a hunting trained dog would be used for a couple of breedings and tossed aside. She could have been traveling with her hunter and lost from a campsite (many dog people won't transport a dog with a collar on because of danger of it getting caught on the crate).

I have contacted the Indiana GSH rescue and am waiting for them to reply back. I've also checked on petfinder as well as pet amber alert and noone has listed her as missing. I haven't tried finding any breeders however, since I don't know what her bloodline is, but I will try that. Thanks :)

Update-

Her owner has been found!! He just recently bought a house here and had no idea who to contact. But he has described her to a T down to the very specifics! I'm so happy that I didn't take her to the shelter!

Woohoo!
