Fox Attack!

So sorry to hear of your loss. I have been dealing with foxes also, and they have taken a lot of my chickens while they free range. I have not let them out of their run since my last loss - three of four! I'm recovering though, I have six pullets integrated in with the remaining chicken.

I've been thinking about all the foxes out there nowadays, more than I have seen in the past. We chicken owners have grown in numbers, giving the fox a constant supply of food (unfortunately). On the road I live on there are at least four different houses with NEW chickens, and my road is only two miles long! If this continues and there is no trapping involved (thanks to the beautiful Canadian Lynx), the fox will have an explosion in numbers. Kinda like the seven year cycle of the rabbits/hares. Just IMHO ! Good luck with your trapping, hope you get that sucka!

Oh, I didn't lose any, but I sure came close. It terrified me!
Oh, and my dad says that he'll check the chickens often when I'm not home and bring his pistol with him and shoot the fox if it goes after our chickens. Sorry fox, I know you enjoy chickens, but I need them!

I agree with u on the rise in the fox population. They are getting bold also. The one I saw came right up into the middle of my backyard, about 40-50 feet from the back field. It was about 8-8:30 in the morn. I scared him away. Didn't have the .22 ready at that time. My husband saw one come out and actually grab a hen. He ran to where it went in to the weeds and there it was about 5 ft in with the hen in his mouth. He yelled, it dropped the hen and ran off. The hen was fine, wasn't hurt at all, but sadly she was one of the 3 that disappeared last weekend. We haven't seen any sign this weekend, but we have been around the house and yard with lots of activity. It's when we will be at work this week that worries me. We set a live trap and caught a racoon this morn, but no fox. We've been informed they are very hard to trap this way, but it is all we have right now. Hopefully, we can get him this week. It's very stressful to think what we might come home to every evening. I hate to keep them in the coop all day. It is supposed to be in the low 90's all this week. But we may have to.
