A few days ago we saw a fox in our woods. We werent able to handle it because we had some people on our property at the time. Tonight I heard this:
Is it a fox? I know its hard to hear but it sounds almost like quacking but not like a duck. I know foxes make all kinds of sounds

Sounds like a fox to me.
Ok thank you for confirming my suspicions. We've never had fox in this area before. Mostly raccoons, possums and coyotes. But lately a hare kindled in our garden and I saw the fox the other day. I was hoping he wandered off far away from here but I guess he's got a den nearby judging by the sounds. Putting the warning level at code red until he decides to leave or he is forced to leave. How do you trap a fox?

There is a good chance if there is one there is another. A live trap would work.

I have trapped fox before and used a trap you would use for a coon. I also had a hog trap. If you trap it are you prepared to eliminate it? As long as they haven't gotten any of my birds I don't bother them but I do have my coops and pens well fortified. I see one quite regularly on my game cameras. I used some old chicken that we had processed that found it's way to the bottom of our freezer as bait to catch one that killed my most special bird. She was out with me and I got distracted for a few minutes and the fox grabbed her and off it went with her. I never did find her but the fox kept showing up during the day. It was mangy and stinky. Good luck...

We are prepared to do what is necessary. Id much rather the beast stay away so we dont have to. It is a red fox not a gray so its not endangered. I checked our local laws and ordinances ahead of time to be certain as to what can be done. We can either trap and release somewhere else or trap/hunt/kill it. I think if we released it it would just come back...

Well I had petitioned my fiancee to try and trap the animal but he went with the "wait and see" approach. Needless to say, wait and see happened. We caught the little bugger after he had killed one of our birds. He hadnt even managed to start eating her yet before we scared him off. We buried her because I said "he doesnt get the good meat" and I found what I believe to be its den by following its tracks. I wanted to smoke it out but my fiancee wasnt clear with my tracking ability and just set the live trap up near the opening. My birds will not be allowed out of the run until he is no longer an issue. I fully plan on tanning the hide and saving his skull as a warning. I realize he was just doing what comes natural but he messed with the wrong hens!
