Non-bird people keep asking me what birds smell like because they’ve seen bird owners on TikTok and Instagram talking about how good they smell.
I’ve kept various parrots and a canary over my life and when they’re clean they just smell sort of dusty. I think people think they smell nice because you always love the smell of someone you love. My chickens also just smell sort of dusty.
My waterfowl have a smell. My ducks all smell musky, a little like a ram in rut, even when they are clean.
But my pilgrim geese smell sweet and fragrant like some of our native tree flowers (that I don’t have in my garden). The vet says they’re both in great shape 🤷‍♀️

Does anyone else experience this?

Just did the spring dig out on my 20x40 foot barn. Ducks have about 1/10th of it was really stinky. Cleaned out the main goose pen didn't smell anything bad. I don't feed in the barn and clean out 2 times a year. Had a young one that had to move into the house for a bit. Pooped smelled it but a hour later nothing.. Geese are such a grooming bird if they have the right water to bath in and are feed right they shouldn't smell. Your doing good.

Geese are so fastidious about grooming, they've always smelled pleasant and clean to me. I've never noticed a floral smell though! I agree, chickens smell dusty, ducks smell... kind of gross, lol.
