Day and half ago I had a goat give birth to a premie doeling. (Doe has been a health wreck and ended up not making it as well as a 2 nd stillborn buckling) however I've been trying to save her daughter. She is around 2 maybe 3 lbs. her teeth are just inside her gums. Yesterday morning she was nursing well on a bottle from the powdered colostrum I had been feeding her. But by evening had lost intrest and I realized she was constipated . I gave her a very mild enema of warm water and 2 drops of dish soap in a syringe. Omg did she poop like a foot long tootsie roll. But still no intrest in a bottle. Gave her more time. About two hrs later she was still pooing but now was moving to scours. Then more serious scours. I have been giving her very small amounts of bounce back through the night with a a touch of molasses for energy ( about 1/4 a teaspoon mixed into 2 oz of bounce back) I've only able to get maybe 1/4 oz into her at a time if that much. This morning she is now bleeding from her rectum bright red..not gushes but more then a smear. She is peeing normal. Got her to take 1/4-1/3 oz of colostrum by dripping some on her tongue and she did try to nurse on the bottle for a sec. She can still stand and seems perky all things considered. A vet is not a option as my hubby wont justify a vet bill on a baby who has such poor odds. Baby is a Nubian /boer cross and she is about 1/3 the size of my other babies when they were born. Any advise? How can I stop the bleeding? I do have iv fluids i considered injecting sq .

I have heard of cypress oil stopping breeding internally. Like for hemeroids. I'm not sure how safe it is for goats but if you got some cypress oil and coconut oil and made suppositories that may help. I'd do 1-2 drops per 4 spoon fulls of coconut oil. Either shape them in foil or get one of those water bottle ice cue trays with the long thin ones

Where would you get cypress oil? I live pretty rural and it's not something I have on hand

Well the blood is slowing down and she is drinking from her bottle again... Been giving a oz of colostrum and a hr later a oz of bounce back. Then repeating. She seems perkier then this morning when I thought she had given up. I still don't have high hopes for her but I'm not giving up anytime soon.

My thoughts are that giving the enema caused internal trauma. Considering how tiny a goat kid is, you must be incredibly careful when inserting anything in the rectum, like a thermometer or the enema you gave her. A tiny bit too far, and you'll tear right through the large intestine. Death would result from outright bleeding (kid likely would have bled to death already) or bacterial peritonitis when intestinal contents leak into the abdominal cavity. Luckily, it seems like you might've not caused a perforation, but still damaged the delicate internal tissue, and the wound would be exposed to the bacteria that live in the large intestine.

If a veterinary care is out of the question for an animal that needs it (and fyi, this is a case where it is needed. When it any bleeding from any orifice normal in a goat? It isn't. Ever.), perhaps your family needs to reconsider keeping them. Any animal in need of advanced veterinary care needs to see a veterinarian, period. That is responsible animal care 101.

Monitor the kid for signs of infection that indicate a possible infection due to the rectal trauma you caused. Fever and lethargy at likely going to be the biggest signs.

I want to give a update that she is doing much better. I was able to get ahold of a friend who has been raising goats for a long time. She believes when she started to have such violent scours through the night she broke some blood vessels as she didn't start bleeding untill early morning. I have been in with her all day and she is doing so much better then this morning. I'm not giving up on her.

As to why I chose to not take her to the vet... I actually do have a decent farm vet i use a hr away. But Im sorry but I can't justify a few hundred dollars on a goat who I suspect only has about a 10% chance .. She is about a week early and is too small even for that age. Dosent mean I'm not trying my damnest to up her odds. And no I wasn't looking for a pat on the head or anything like that. What I was hoping for was hopefully someone who may have delt with thus situation before and could share how they overcame it. The enema I gave was very mild and I only barely got it inside her. She didn't start the bleeding untill after seven hrs later and after a very bad case of scours. She is barely bigger then my ten week old kitten but with longer legs. I have raised bottle babies before with very good success rate..thus however if my first premie and I'm having a very hard time finding any good info.

Just want to give a update. Vegas my lil girl is acting like a normal lil bottle baby once again :). She has given me a few good scares where I thought id lose her. But round the clock care, bounce back and pen g have all helped her to get back on track. She has grown a bit as well thankfully and follows me around the house and jumping around. I've never before had a goat that as been as high maintaince but she is so worth it. I will get pics later today. I've held off because I didn't want a reminder if I lost her but my now pretty sure she is going to pull through.
