Free Food

When I was in the grosery yesterday I asked if they ahad any thorw aways I could give my chicks. They had just put in the dumpster......Well today ( I live VERY close) the produce guy said I have something for you.......I have a hudge box of cabage leave beet tops......ect.....ect... One head of lettus I did keep for myself

, but really there is nothing Wrong with it! I had a hard time putting all of some of it in the compost! I did keep what my girls can eat in a couple of days.....but NO one else picks this stuff up. I can not beleive it!

Great! It is simply amazing what's thrown away each day. I'll have to remember that for when I get my little flock.

Years ago that's how I got a lot of my houseplants, from the dumpster behind a florist... nursed quite a few back to their glory!

I've checked 6 of the closest grocery stores and they all tell me they give it to a company that creates methane gas or give it to something else for some other reason. There is none left for my chickens.

So sorry, may be they would just let you have a head of lettus or something......get on their good side. lol

My wife does the shopping so she sees them all of the time. I need to convince her to ask for me every time she goes in. She is a lot cuter than me too - I'm sure that makes a huge difference.

i've asked at all our local grocery stores. They all say they give or sell it to a company that composts it. Years ago i used to pick up boxes of lettuce in the back of grocery stores for my rabbit. But no one seems to do that anymore.

Free food is great! I've been doing it for over a year. Some stuff is chipped up in my shredder for the girls to eat or else cooked in the winter for a hotmeal for them. Check out my blog, I wrote about both of those topics. Sometimes like today, they get really lucky and get tofu (they go crazy over it) and also veggie burgers. They are funny to watch they grab a piece and run so they can eat in peace but as soon as they run several other girls chase them.

If anybody has any tips/tricks to get free food, please post since I get shut down everywhere I go.

I live in a small town so they may be more apt to give away food for your animals. They used to give it to someone who had pigs and he butchered them just before I asked. Maybe if you try smaller stores or non-chain stores you might have a better chance.
