We had a rooster that herded the girls and kept them close to the coop when free ranging. Now he is gone and they seem to have no boundries. I'm worried they will go on the highway. Any suggestions?

I have a friend with that problem. His coop is only 50 feet from the road and his chickens are always right up against the roadside.
If your coop is far enough from the road that they can't see the coop from the road, they won't go that far.

Curious: why do you say that?
My chickens go completely to the opposite corner of our house away from the coop, no way they can see the coop from there. They do not go into the road but they have gone out to the drainage ditch by the road, although they don't make a habit of it.

True. Last 2 days they have been staying right around the coop and run when I let them out. Our Sneaky Predator got one of my adult Cornish Cross hens and my little black Crested Polish cockerel night before last. I can't figure out why they stay so close to the coop and run but won't go in the coop or run at night. Well, some of them do but not all of them.
