free range chickens

if i let my chickens free range will the jump back in too the hen house at night cause its hard to catch them will they stay close to the house to or will they wander away

They will return. If concerned, then for first couple of times out release them towards end of day so they will return to roost with hour or so. Your and their confidence will be developed slowly.

You can train them from the beginning to go into the coop when you want them to, with treats. Mine know when I come outside and reach for the can of sunflower seeds to go running to the coop. I usually shake the can as I walk to the coop. Then I throw a handful of seeds on the floor, they go running in and I close the door. Works every time. No muss, no fuss.

they will come back to roost. Mine are all in by 7:30 at night...I go out and toss some scratch or bring treats...they don't like being out in the dark...
