Hi guys!

I am buying a house in the country and I am allowed to have chickens!!!! This is perfect, I love it and it is one of the things that makes me the most exited about my new house :) I love animals and I have 2 months to read and get prepared for it.

Anyway, I don't know much about chickens so everyday I am reading the articles from the Learning center.

I had a question that will probably sound stupid to you.. but, my yard is surrounded by tall fences on most sides, but one side is just delimited by a river.

Will chickens try to get into the water? I think I should protect the river (or protect the chicks) but also, I am thinking that in nature, they just wouldn't jump in the water and die, right? At least, I hope.

Yeah I know, basic question, but I didn't read anything about rivers yet! It is not super deep, maybe 2-3 foot deep, 15-18 feet large, but the water runs pretty fast, there is a lot of current. I am sure they would hear the water and know that it is unsafe.. but again, I don't know much about a chicken's intelligent (well, more their instincts then intelligence).

Thanks!

(sorry if my english isn't perfect, I am french, if you didn't guess by now hehe)

The flowing river may very will keep your chickens contained but predators have no problems with swimming. Our dogs often take a dip in our pond and swim out after the ducks. A river would not be much of an obstacle if chickens were on the other side.

Our shepherd fishing. He will often snap and catch a fish!
