Question.. we normally spray for mosquitoes in our backyard. Since getting chickens we allow them to free range when we are home. If we spray this year will that hurt them? Or should we not do it?

It could.
Not to mention all the other insects,
including predator insects who eat mosquitoes and other pest insects,
it would kill.

How often do you spray and what chemical exactly do you use?

Not sure the new of it. It hooks up to your hose and you spray it in the yard. And maybe twice a year depending on how bad the mosquitoes are.

What are you spraying with? Different insecticides have different withdrawal periods and provide different dosages. It's kind of hard to talk about medicines or pesticides if you don't know which one you are talking about.

I live where we would not be able to step outside at night if mosquitoes were not controlled. It's not unusual to hear a mosquito truck spraying after dark. That's when they spray, when mosquitoes are active. We are not falling over dead. Neither are the wild birds which have similar respiratory systems as chickens. But are you using a different product?

Before I use any pesticide I read the label. Much of this information, including active ingredients and how to use it, are on the label. Look on the label to see what the active ingredient is. are you spraying the grass or misting it into the air. Are you spraying during daytime when they are not active or at night when they are? What are you using and how are you using it?

If you are that concerned you can contact the manufacturer of that pesticide and ask them your questions. They may even suggest a different product or tell you an efficient way to spray. If you are in the US you can contact your county extension office and chat with them about what product to use and how to use it.
