Hi there!
Well, I know nothing about geese at all.... I was over at a friends today that has chickens, and they had a coop with about a dozen new chicks in it, and also 3 turkey babies, and 3 big goslings. At first I thought they had 1 goose and 2 ducks, because the goose was dark grey and the "ducks" were yellow, LOLOLOL... but they told me the three were all geese.

One of the yellow goslings had a foot problem, and when I thought it was a duck (silly me!) I told them it was a Niacin deficiency that usually causes that... but once they corrected me on species, I told my friends I would ask here on BYC (the "Internet poultry people") and see what could have caused it. It started about 3 days ago, and they had no idea why or what to do about it.
The gosling holds it left foot all clamped together... like a human hand with the finger pads touching..(rather than a fist type clamping) and drags it's left foot. The other goslings feet seemed fine.

When I was talking about Niacin deficiency, I was peeking at their feed bags, and I only saw chicken feed on hand.

Let me know what to tell them please? Im going back tomorrow, so hope to have some advice to share with them from our internet poultry experts :D :D Thanks!

They need to offer niacin 100-150 mgs. in their water daily, plain niacin, not the flush free or time release, and they can make a shoe for the little one out of hard plastic or heavy card board by placing the goslings foot on it and tracing the pattern then cutting it out taping it real good especially if using plastic as to not hurt the gosling, then taping it too the gosling bottom of it's foot. hopefully after 2-3 days it will straighten itself out. very crucial it is done quickly.

I was over there today and I helped them make the "shoe" for the gosling. We used cardboard and vetwrap, so hope it stays on, at least no issues with glue sticking! It seemed to hold it's leg better after we put it down, not like it was going to use it or anything but it wasn't dragging it as far behind.as it had been.
She could NOT find plain Niacin... finally she was at a pharmacy and the pharmacist told her that the slow release niacin they carried was only different because of the capsule, and inside was plain niacin.. so she got that one and broke the capsule and put 1/5th of the 500 mg of powder in the waterer.

We were hoping the niacin is safe for the chicks and turkeys too?

Yay great news about finding the niacin. and that ya'll were able to fashion a shoe I hope it helps and that both together gets the gosling up and going. they may have to put the shoe back on a few times[they seem to enjoy getting them off] but hopefully with time they will see a difference. thanks for update.
