My rooster is constantly mating with my hens but is begining to pull out lots of feathers and cause scratches. My littlest one has a bld head and scratches all over her comb, wings, and neck. I seperate him for hours a day but he comes back in at night worse and more " charged" then before. I've heard of chicken sadles but I'm not sure how they work. Any tips or other ideas?

A good ratio is reportedly one rooster for ten hens. I have 9 hens, but the rooster has favorites. I put saddles or aprons on them to protect their backs from this frequent attention. The saddles fit over the wings to protect the hen's back.

The hens don't seem to mind the saddles after the first few minutes.

The saddles are simple to put on. Simple, not necessarily easy. First catch the chicken. Then the easy part.

There are some videos on YouTube on saddles and aprons that will demonstrate putting them on the chickens.

I recommend waiting until after dark, when the chickens are quiet. You can pick them off the roost and put the saddles on with ease.
