Yesterday AM I noticed our frizzle hen not out with the others, eyes closed and puffy looking. No discharge from anywhere, but runny white poo stuck to her vent area. Pretty sure she hasn't been laying for awhile. She's got a naked back from an overzealous roo. She's inside in our "infirmary" and ate last nite, but not this morning. Still sitting with eyes closed (but she opens them when I walk in).
Any ideas where or what to start for treatment?
Thanks.
ps She's about 4 yrs old.

first being 4 yrs old is a minus in her health

2nd is she sneezing or any thing like that?

if not then she needs some
wet mash probiotics and Vit E and Vit B complex and some calcium to regrow the feathers

feed this twice a day for two weeks
then three times the third week
and two times the 4th week
and then once a week for life

WET MASH MEDICATED/VIT'S
3 tbsp of dry crumble feed
4 tbsp of milk any kind
1 tbspoon of yougart
1- Vit D tablet crushed ( smallest dosage)
1- calcium tablet crushed ( smallest dosage)
1-1000 mg Vit E cut tip off capsule and sqeeze it into the wet mash
1 Vit B complex crushed and put in the wet mash

mix all good
now put 1 tbsp of applesauce on top so she likes the wet mash

feed this twice a day for two weeks
when cleaned up in 30 minutes clean wet boewl and restock the dry feed

in her water give her 1 tbsp of ACV to qt od water
at all times
so she gets the Calcium and Vit D she needs in her system

any questions just email me and I will try and help you out

Thank you, Glenda. No sneezing or discharges of any kind. She just looks really tired. I printed the recipe. Thanks, I'll try that.

She needs Tylan or Tarramycin. Both are antibiotics and can be found at livestock/farm stores. I believe it is an upper respiratory infection and all of your chickens will need to be treated. Tylan is the antibiotic I use. Very broad spectrum. It isn't cheap but it will last a very long time.

1 teaspoon of powder to a gallon of water. Use for 7 days. Do not provide other water sources. It is very difficult to mix. Put measured powder in a DRY jar. Add 1/4 cup water. Cover and shake well. Add it to additional water to make a gallon.
Make new mixture everyday. Because it is so expensive and I only have a few chickens I mix 1/2 teaspoon Tylan with 1/2 gallon water.

Good luck

The "runny white poo" sounds to me like a broken or soft shell egg leaking out. I would put her in a sink of warm water with a bit of natural soap. She could easily be eggbound, if she had been laying. Hopefully she will pass whatever is stopped up in her.

Personally, I would not give an antibiotic, and I see no reason to suspect a respiratory infection.

Here is a good article to read:

Glenda's recipe is very good for any chicken who is ill, IMHO, however.
