Is it normal for baby chicks to frizzle or put out "helicopter" feathers? I have 6 Brahma chicks, 12 days old or so, that I bought locally (hatchery eggs he incubated) and 3 of them have very curly feathers growing out. Any thoughts/worries? I had one chick that did this from a batch of Black Copper Marans (the only chicks I've ever raised before now) that stayed small and slow to feather for ages. His feathers were not really curly, though, like these, but were spread out at angles all awry. They were fragile and broke off, taking several weeks to replace themselves with normal feathers, all the while staying small like a new chick while his siblings took off growing. I had to keep him separated until he caught up. We named him Wilbur, of course....

Another question for those in the know, are frizzling and helicoptering of feathers the same thing? If not, what's the difference/significance?

I wonder if you happened to get some frizzle cochins. Their feathers naturally curl. Hopefully someone else might know more than I do. I don't have any chickens yet

mine are due week of April 5th, but I did order a couple of bantam frizzle cochins. They are super cute.

Here is the article I read last year on helicoptering. It can be a result of "runt-stunt" syndrome. Very interesting. Has anyone dealt with this before? My chick that had this recovered well once it was removed from the flock. We kept him inside for a few weeks until his "proper" feathers came in well.

I think what's happening to my Brahma babies is different.

Has anyone ever heard of frizzled Brahmas?

I've now done tons of research on frizzles and I agree, these chicks are frizzles. Any other thoughts on breed? Anyone heard of frizzle Brahmas? I realize any breed can frizzle, but has anyone heard of Brahma/frizzle crosses?
