Hi and thanks to everyone for sharing so much information. I was reading posts long before bringing our first 7 chicks home in east Tennessee this winter. They're in the coop now and healthy thanks in part to the wealth of advice and thoughts shared here.
We've started with 3 Black Langshan pullets, 3 Buff Brahma pullets, and 1 Light Brahma cockerel. He was supposed to be Buff but the co-op gave us a Light instead
Being chicken noobs, we didn't detect it for a couple weeks. By then, he was our rooster, and now we love his coloring. We started with these breeds because they're supposed to be docile, quiet, and easy to raise, and they really have been. Of course, social distancing has given us a ton of time to spend taming them. Before we knew it, these were all named, crate-trained, lap birds.
We hope to brood one more set of chicks at the end of this month and then slowly grow the flock over time, provided chicken math doesn't take over too hard. One thing's for sure: I LOVE chickens. They've been joyful additions to our quaranteam and to our little farm in the smoky mountains.
Glad to be here.
