FrostBite on foot?

I have just gotten a phone call from my cousin and she tells me that one of our chickens could possibly have a severe case of frostbite on the bottom of her foot. She says it looks black but I have not yet seen it. We live in wisconsin and it has been getting very cold out. Is there anything we can do for her at this point? Please help

Frostbite would more likely be on toes, unless the roosts are frozen for some reason. Also, even below freeaing, frostbite is usually caused by insufficient ventilation, not just cold temps. I hope they don't have metal roosts for this reason. A black area on the bottom of a foot makes me think bumblefoot, not frostbite.

A picture may help to tell what is wrong. Open pans of water that chickens step into can cause the feet to freeze quickly.

here are some pictures of it (im her cousin) it is very black and hard and also the tips of her toes are dark purple also it looks like her comb is frost bit too. she was sleeping on the roof of the coop when this happened. is there anything we can do for it? we put little booties on her feet also

It does look like pictures I have seen of frostbite. The foot does not look like bumblefoot at all. I have heard that others use coconut oil or Neospori ointment on frostbite to help it heal. Here is a link to read:

when we had the below 0 temps my 3 month old got it on her feet too, I dont know why she got it but all the other chickens didnt, the bedding was fresh and fluffy
nothing frozen. Has anyone had this happen? will her toes fall off?

Hello oletymer, I also have a pullet who got frost bite on her toes. They were shriveled as in your pictures, but they ended up falling off on her left foot, which was worse, but on her right they have not fallen off but are still shriveled. She now has just a stump for her left foot, but she gets around fine, (though with a limp understandably), and she has even been jumping up to the second level of roosts at night.

It looks to me like your pullet's toes might or might not fall off. I would keep an eye out for any infection that could occur. I did not have a problem with that, but from reading other posts, it is possible, and it would be good to keep an eye on her anyway.

Thank you , she's doing good will have to get pics of her feet tomarrow, we also have a leghorn that got it bad on his comb and waddles, in a second coop, so it wasnt a moisture problem because there both vented and all the others didnt have a problem, heres a before of my roo too.

UPDATE ON STRUTS FROST BITE...he lost more than half of the one waddle and about 1 1/2 inches off the other, his comb is all dried out and will come off next,

my rooster started hopping around so I brought him in and saw this, 2weeks ago. It has spared all theway up and don't work now the other leg is started to do the same.. I don't know what to do with him or stop it
