Does my baby (Hawk) have frostbite?? There's at least 8 inches of snow outside...
I've already lost my precious only rooster to frostbite today and I refuse to lose another one of my friends.
Shes posing for me as I take these pictures
Anyway I brought her inside and now she's standing on the rim of the sink screaming at me.
I think she's ok but because I lost Woozi this morning I don't want to take any more chances.
She's not acting any differently. Just got this black stuff on her comb.
One if my other hens, Gracie, also has this on her comb.
I'm worried, Hawk is my favorite chicken (don't tell the others) and I've nursed her though injuries before...
Please help!

It appears to be dry blood - frostbite is usually restricted to the distal outer edges of the comb where blood flow is limited, additionally, frostbite would not be in specks, or raised. Looking at the weather in TN, it appears to be the only 24F, which is not that cold for a healthy chicken. I find it very unlikely your rooster died directly due to frostbite.

It's blood. Frost bite is when the tines (Or in my weather the whole comb) turn first grey, then black, then yellow before suddenly not being there anymore

Thank you :)

Well, I'm not sure if it was just frostbite that did him in but he definitely had it - on his comb. He also lost half of his wattles to it.
He might have been dehydrated; the turkey tom who lives in the coop also might have been preventing him from getting water.
I found him this morning with his wing caught in the predator netting, he was upside down and fighting but after I picked him up he went still. He had a few spasms but otherwise did not move after I grabbed him.

Thank you I can rest easy now 🖤

We've just never had cold weather before - it's never been below 30 before - and my girls and boys have never experienced snow.

I'll try to remember to get pictures of what frost bite looks like in more extreme cases. It's been negative teens for about a week and a half here so they're not very happy
