Are the chilly chilis purely ornamental, or are they also edible?

They're edible, but I wouldn't eat them straight. They're more of an added "spice", with a heck of a punch. People will dry them, string sewing thread through them and hang them in the kitchen and just pluck one or two when they make chili or something similar and want to kick it up a notch.
