In the Brooder
My Black Austrolorps are 19 weeks old tomorrow. On Saturday two of them laid their first egg. They were small but had nice shells. Then Sunday there were three eggs. One small but normal. One the same size but soft pink shell. One as big as your finger tip, pink soft shell. Today only one small but normal egg.
Here is the funny behavier.... My hens would eat out of my hand but if I moved slowly like I was going to pick them up they all ran. That was until Saturday. Two of my hens (and I'm thinking these are the two that laid the first eggs) acted differently. When I would move my hands to try to pick them up they would squat down, cock their wings out slightly and sort of shiver. I could pick them up with no problem. They didn't act afraid when I picked them up, petted them and set them down. They are still like that. Obviously a third hen laid an egg sunday but only those two act like that.
This chicken stuff is all new to me but I'm having so much fun and getting lots of laughs. It's strange how 5 chickens can win your heart over like a dog or cat. They've become my best friends.
