Not sure where to post this. 6 weeks ago I brought home some Cornish Cross when I already had 8 assorted brown egg layers from TSC. My Russel Terrier, Molly, quickly tore opened the box and dispatched a baby chick. I probably didn't respond well.

Since then, I have moved the older chicks out to a coop and they have been free ranging for a week. I have been supervising any interactions between the two species, and the roosters seem to attack her and she knows she will be in trouble if she responds aggressively. Good dog.
I have spotted her standing gaurd watching over them, and me. LOL She did run after something trying to come into the yard the other day, but I never saw it.

Over the weekend I installed an automatic door opener to the run because I'm at work at sunrise and I don't like opening up the run when dark and predators can still be lurking. We happen to be on Easter break right now, and when I got up I saw the chickens coming out of their run when the sun was up and shining. I went to do a few things and noticed a crow taking interest and land near the coop and then take off. That was strange so I went to a different window to check the coop/run. There was a squirrel in the run! I didn't want it to get to comfy so I grabbed my coat and called for Molly. We ran to the coop and the chickens that were under the porch came running too. I'm sure we were an interesting mob. LOL

Well, Molly did her thing. She spotted that squirrel in the run. The squirrel tried to run for its life, but forgot how he got in there. After Molly made a few laps around the outside of the run and the squirrel inside the run, it found the open door. It ran out with Molly on it's tail. She actually climbed up a pile of pallets while chasing it up the tree. Good girl!
I think that squirrel will think twice about going into that run. LOL

Does anyone else have some humorous stories of pets protecting or playing with your chickens? Everyone can always use a smile. 😃
