I picked up a sack of chick starter at the local feed mill yesterday. I asked at the time if it's medicated or non and they said that they only sell medicated and that chicks in our area "need it". They assured me that it contains no antibiotics, only Amprolium as a coccidiostat. I wasn't thrilled but decided that I was OK with using it. Just now, I lifted the bag to bring it in the house and the tag on the bottom was visible. It has no Amprolium but it does have "Bacitracin Methylene Disalicylate" in it! I did some reading and it seems what they've sold me is used for rapid growth in mass-produced, short-life broilers.

I'm picking up the chicks tomorrow morning so I guess I'll have to go into a feed store first and get a sack of "name brand" feed. And then I have to go back to the mill at some point and return the other feed since they made it clear they only have one type of chick starter. It's unopened and they flat out lied to me -- I just hope they aren't ugly about giving me my money back. The next nearest feed mill is 45 minutes away and not on the way to anything so I'll have to call them and ask a crapload of questions to see if it's worth the trip.

I would be pretty mad too. I don't see why they would hassle you about it if it's unopened and if you complain to the manager about his employee.

I doubt the store will have a problem with you returning the feed....I think it is like a lot of places....knowledge of subject matter is not always a requirement for getting the job. Good luck!

Oh, I'd be torqued...

I'm not a raging tree hugger, but I LOVE the idea of eggs without all the 'additives'.

I'd love to hear the conversation when you take the feed back. Give em hell, kiddo...

That's the problem with most stores these days. They never hold on to any employees that know anything about what they are selling for any length of time.
I don't think you will have a problem returning it either. Unfortunately, it just doesn't pay to ask anyone anything. You're better off doing your own research in advance.
Du-Mor, Manna-Pro & Purina make chick starter feed.
Purina Start & Grow is medicated with Amprollium & you can feed it from hatch to layer age (16-20 wks.)
Purina Flock Raiser is unmedicated chick feed.
Manna Pro is medicated & is fed until 8 weeks, then go to a chick grower/finisher feed.
Du-Mor is unmedicated & is fed until 10 weeks before switching to a grower/finisher feed.
Hope this helps you.

You don't have to be anything near a tree hugger to be upset about an antibiotic in the feed. Last I heard, Bacitracin is an antibiotic.

The people at this store are not newbies or kids... which makes it even worse. They were knowingly deceptive figuring I wouldn't know any better.
