My name is Nina Essex, and I’m excited to join this amazing group of chicken enthusiasts! My family and I are building The Essex Ranch, a dream project where we’re transitioning from city life to ranch life. We’ve started this journey to embrace a more sustainable, nature-centered lifestyle and to reconnect with the land, animals, and everything that comes with it.

The Essex Ranch is a work in progress, with plans for gardens, a greenhouse, and, of course, chickens! We’re here to learn, share, and grow as we take on this adventure. Chickens will play a big role in making Essex Ranch feel complete, and I’m eager to create a colorful flock that brings life and personality to our home.

I’m here to soak up your wisdom, hear your stories, and maybe share a few of our own along the way. Thank you for welcoming us—we’re excited to be part of this community!

Looking forward to learning from all of you. 🐓

Hi!

Hello & welcome to BYC! Loved the intro! As for breeds, my top #1 are Sapphire gems. They are prolific layers and their brown eggs are very large. They are very very friendly birds and my Sapphire gem roo loves to jump onto my back when I'm leaning down and he likes preening my hair🥹 female chicks are dark gray with dark legs and males are light gray with yellow legs and they usually have at least a hint of a white spot on their heads. That way, it's guaranteed that you got what gender you wanted (chickens were you can tell it's sex at birth by the baby down feathers are called sexlinks.)☺️
