I am just exploring what it would be like to get chickens I am just getting how much money it would cost and how much space and all the basics! :)

Greetings from Kansas, avecat, and

! Pleased you joined our flock! You have asked a lot in a very short message. I think you are wise to do the research first. First stop: check out the Learning Center below. It gives you the ins and outs of basic chicken keeping. It is difficult to answer how much it will cost to have chickens - most backyard flock owners raise chickens for reasons other than economics. So much depends on what materials you have on hand to build coop and run. Also, the reason you are raising chickens (meat, eggs, both, amusement). So many considerations!! But the fun is in the research. Good luck and happy reading!!

Welcome! You came to the right place! :)

Chickens are great animals to raise. Let me list what I think are pros and cons. Of course, this is just my opinion. :D

Pros-
They are easy to keep- inexpensive after initial cost of coop and run.
Great Pets- if you handle them a lot as babies they will be really gentle as adults. They are also GREAT with kids as they aren't massively larger than the kids are!
The eggs are 10 X's better than a store. The egg yolk is GOLDEN not YELLOW!
They are so beautiful.
They are a BLAST to watch and enjoy as they interact with each other.
They eat lots of table scraps- very little will go to the trashcan.
If you have a garden, they are great at the end of the year to mulch it and level it back together- pooping and mixing that in to make a nice fertilizer.

Cons-
You can never have enough.
You can never have enough.
You can never have enough!

OK, just kidding!
They will get sick/hurt and die and it is sad- a part of life, but sad.
There will be problems to be solved- but joy in conquering the problems. (and BYC to help out!!)
There is the initial cost of coop and runs.
They do poop a lot- lots of cleaning up after them, but also lots of great fertilizer!

I really think that's it. As with all animals, there will be problems. But with chickens they are usually smaller problems! If you like animals, or really like eating eggs you can't go wrong!

Good luck finding more info out about them (kudos to you for checking it out first!) and have fun doing it!
