I read in a pet book today that galvanized metal is toxic to birds. It said to scrub galvanized fencing in vinegar before using it, to remove excess zinc. Would it be a problem with chickens? All the hardware cloth and chicken wire was galvanized at the store. Do I have to scrub it all down for the coop?

I think that was meant for caged birds, like parrots and such, that use their beaks to climb around on the wire. Those types of birds also lick the wire.

I have read that too in pet books, but I also read in the same books that it is OK for chickens and rabbits. Most of the metal feeders and waterers you buy for chickens is galvanized metal, and if you don't put medicine in them they are fine.

This is just my opinion, there may be others that feel differently.
