Ok, so I have some coturnix quail in my aviary, we’ll I also have a male Gambel’s in there as well. Well while I was sitting watching my birds I watched my male Gambel’s jump on and breed one of my female coturnix, I was wondering is there even the slightest chance of hybridization from them. I think I already know the answer which is they can’t because they are old world quail and new world quail and the species aren’t related closely enough. But I wanted to here from some folks who are a little more knowledgeable than I am. So is there even a chance?

I believe that natural hybrids are very rare, even when mixing bobs and other new world quail to make blobs and such, I think they do artificial insemination and still very few develop. I don’t believe that even in ideal lab conditions an old and new world quail could produce a hybrid, they are not closely enough related, top that with the poor survival rate of hybrids, and natural breeding vs artificial insemination and it’s just not something I could ever see happening.
