Gambel Quail Indoors?

Quail are only stinky if you don't keep the cages dry and clean.
A specific type of quail doesn't actual smell better or worse than another type.

The only reason buttons don't smell much is because they are tiny and because of their size they don't poop quite as much. Buttons are also kept indoors because they can't handle cold very well, so it's better to keep them inside rather than have them die from the cold during winter.

In any case, keeping birds indoors will be dusty. If you have any breathing issues, it's not recommended.

We don't have any breathing issues, but thanks for bringing that up. I'm now going to be getting an air purifier.

Any and all quail droppings will stink if their enclosure is not kept clean as possible.
Buttons are usually kept indoors due to temperature requirements. If other quail are kept indoors (Coturnix, Bobwhites, Gambles, Valleys, Moutain or Mearns you will need much more space than is required for buttons.

Thanks everyone. I've settled on some jumbos for now, as I can get fully grown hens locally. I'm concentrating on eggs for now.

I have plans for three cages, 6'x2.5'x18". 15 square feet ea. Five quail ea. 3 sq. ft./bird. The design allows for later expansion.

Sound good? I welcome any and all advice!
