I have a Swedish Blue about 4 months old. We've been feeding her the same gamer food that we feed to our quail. The feed store where we adopted her at 1mo recommended it, but I wanted to check with the duck community to make sure this is true information. In addition to the gamer food, she free ranges the entire yard, eats kale & snacks on our chickens layer pellets & dried meal worms. This is our first duck. She was a spontaneous decision that we made after finding her alone in a cage at the back of the feed store. She was so happy to see me & my kids. After we found out she'd been alone out there for weeks, we knew we had to bring her home. She looks great & seems happy & healthy, but just wanted to make sure we are on the right track. Any info on what we're doing right or wrong would be helpful & welcomed.

When you say "her," does that mean you're sure it's female or hoping and not sure yet? I'm guessing what you're feeding her isn't the right nutrient mix for ducks, but do you mind saying what it is? I can look it up to check the ingredients.

We feed our ducks Mazuri Waterfowl Maintenance feed during non-laying season.

The guys at the feed store said she's female (but you know how that goes.) I'm assuming she's female because she's pretty chatty. Her bill is a combo of charcoal & green & her feet are orange/yellow with a tiny bit of grey, so I guess it could go either way. I see no sign of curl in her tail, but until she lays or tries to saddle a chicken, I guess we wont know for sure. I've been feeding her Nutrena Gamebird crumbles. I considered switching her to purina flock raiser but decided against it because it looks to be more of a 'grower' food. Those are the only two 'waterfowl' foods any of our local feed stores carry. She also eats a lot of dried meal worms, kale & whatever she rustles up in the yard. I just did the math & it looks like she's coming up on 5 months. I would appreciate any advice, because I haven't learned how to speak duck fluently yet.

The Nutrena website says the gamebird feed varies regionally and you have to check the tag on your specific bag to see what's in it. You might be able to take a pic of it and post it here.

The food varies by region? How bizarre! We pour the food into a Gama seal bucket & throw the bags out, so I don't actually have one right now. I need to buy more food in the next day or two. I guess I'll compare both labels then. Thanks.
