gap size

I'm adding a dog kennel gate in place of the double-doors to my chicken shed (54" w X 72" h) for ventilation. This is the kind that has welded wire, half is just wire and the other half is a door that swings either way. There are gaps around the tube frame where the wire attaches. The welded wire is 2" x 3" spaces and there are longer narrow gaps around the door edges. Do I need to cover all of it with 1" mesh?

Without seeing a picture, I would cover it with 1/2 x 1/2 hardware cloth.

Thanks. I thought what I had was 1" but it's not, it's 1/2", so I'm ready to go to work. Kinda under the gun--my chicken sitter is going on the same trip I am this time! I have less than 2 weeks to get them into the new coop and trained to go in at night. Crunch time!
