I have 2 1 1/2 year old hens that are big pets. They started out sneezing, no mucas etc, some open mouth breathing, one shakes it's head a bit, and when they breath is is like gargeling ur rumbeling ratteling. they seem fine, eat, eat treats, drink, combs may be a bit pale, not sure about that?

What could this be, I thought gape worm?

one has had this for 4 weeks, the other 2 weeks.

Thanks for any help.

It sounds like respiratory disease maybe roup or coryza

you need some good antibiotics not Duramycin

the better antibiotics can be gotten from
smith poultry supply
they will have Vetrx and antibiotics

the best thing would be to buy some
VETRX
USING VETRX on the chickens as such
you would put the vetrx all over the head and in the eyes
and rub it in daily
also under the wings
and give 1/2 tsp down the throat

FOR you TO get this Vetrx

call Smiths Poultry supplies
tell them Glenda Heywood told you to call

also askthem what to give for respiratory disease you need a stronger antibiotic as it is coryza or roup
tell them this:

My buttercup chicken came down with gapeworm last year. She sounded wheezy, shook her head a lot, and made these little sneezy sounds now and then. I spent a lot of time researching her symptoms and was told to check out gapeworm. Anyhow, I figured since I let my chickens roam my backyard every once in while, there was a chance for her to get it.

There is only one medication that works on gapeworm (Fenbendazole) and you can get it from the feed store. It comes in a paste for horses, and trust me you might get more of it on yourself then down your chicken's throat. I had to give her two doses a few days apart since I wasn't sure how much she ingested the first time. Low and behold it worked within a couple of days and she's been fine since then. WORD OF CAUTION!! the Fenbendazole is not for human consumption so you will have to throw away her eggs for at least 2 weeks but I would recommend a whole month. Luckily my buttercup was the only chicken that laid white eggs so it was easy for me to spot hers and throw them away. I am not a vet so I'm just telling you my story. Hope we're not confusing you. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.

thats a great idea follow up on it

I thought fabendzole came in medication form for chickens

a vet would have it also

If you email or call smith poultry ask them about it
and let me know by PM what they say about that drug

any questions email me

We used liquid ivermectin on all our chickens as they free range and had all the symptoms of gapeworm. I got a bottle of ivermectin for cattle/swine at TSC and used an insulin syringe to put 4 drops on the skin at the back of the neck for the banties and 6-7 drops for the regular hens. We witheld eggs for 2 weeks.

The results were apparent after a day or two. No more wheezing or honking. The bottle was about $35 but with a lot of birds to do, it was worth it. We did it at night and they didn't fuss at all. You can also use ivermectin as a heartworm preventative in dogs but you gotta TEST first!

Wow lots of info here.

I checke out coryza, there is no discharge, no labored breathing, just ratteling and a almost chirp like sneezing, a few head shakes, no swelling anywhere. They act fine except this gurgeling and sneezing/chirp.

They free range all of the day from 6 am until 9 pm in the summer.

Since I missed the call in time, I will call in the am and see what they have to say.

I can't find a vet to look at them, no one seems to want to do chickens

Keep us informed on the girls. If you understand what gapeworm is, they are worms that attach themselves to the inside of your chicken's throat. The male and female latch onto each other and then the growth of worms get larger making it harder and harder for your chickens to breathe. I tried looking down my chicken's throat with a flashlight, but couldn't see anything in the quick second or two I could hold her beak open. So, suffice to say, it's a dangerous condition and needs to be dealt with swiftly.

Good luck!!!

i have isolated the 2 hens, but now the large rooster is chirping too.

Gads, no one new has been introduced.

I have spent most of the day on the computer, respitory makes the most sense, gape worm matches the gurgeling. I am stressed to the max.
