Hi everyone,

my 5 yr old black shldr blue male has been breathing funny for a while, he takes big gulps of air. Otherwise he acts his normal self, showing off, coming for treats etc. Havent heard him call at all this year tho, but he never was very vocal so I never wondered about it.

Caught him yesterday and examined him, no rattling in the lungs or any other odd noises related to his breathing, no lumps, no bad smell. He is a good weight and no parasites externally(dewormed/debugged when I moved them into their breeding pen in March). Poop looks normal too.
I did give him some Noromectin(Ivomec for cattle) orally, its a pour-on that I use for all my birds but I thought maybe if its gapeworm or something it might help(been told some time ago that its supposed to)....... he is still up and at'em today after being dosed with it so I don't think it harmed him.

Do the symptoms sound about right for gapeworm, or does anyone have any other ideas what his problem might be?? Anything else I can do for him other then sit and wait?
I had him for 4 yrs now and rather not loose him, his 2 hens seem just dandy.

Thanks in advance,

Respiratory illness in peafowl can be easily cured with Baytryil ( enrofloxyn 10 % solution) 1cc orally every day for 3-4 days. I have treated mine successfully this way.

I recently read a veterinary abstract that treatment for gapeworms is fenbendazole 20mg/kg for three days, so you could try that, but I've also read on BYC that gapes are rare.

Efficacy of fenbendazole against helminth parasites of poultry in Uganda.

Ssenyonga GS.
Abstract

Fenbendazole 4% (Panacur, Hoechst) administered in feed was used to treat chickens infected with Ascaridia galli, Heterakis gallinarum and Railletina spp. It was also used to treat Syngamus trachea in broiler birds. There was a marked drop in helminth egg counts in the faeces on the second day of treatment and the faeces became negative by the seventh day after the last treatment. Post-mortem examination 15 to 21 days later showed that the drug was 100% effective against Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum at 10 mg/kg. However, for complete removal of Railletina spp. 15 mg/kg was required. Similarly 20 mg/kg fenbendazole was effective against Syngamus trachea. It was concluded that fenbendazole is suitable for the treatment of the important intestinal and tracheal worms of poultry, a dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg for 3 consecutive days being recommended for use under field conditions.

Baytril is a great antibiotic, no doubt about that, but I'm really anal when it comes to giving medicine, so I weigh all of my birds and then dose them according to what my vet has recommended. With Baytril they recommended 20mg/kg once a day for five days, so my 4 year old male (6kg) would get twice what my small yearling hen (3kg) would get.

Fenbenzadol and Baytril are both medications I can't seem to get here. My Vets(all 3 of the "large animal" ones) looks at me like I sprouted a third head when I talk about Fenbenzadol and the Baytril is a controlled substance they cannot give out in Canada(according to my Vets anyhow). I can get Tylan in powder form for their water on special order, 3 TBspoons of that cost about an arm and a leg(for 9 TBspoons I can buy a new peacock) and last time I used it it didn't do anything noticeable.

Baytryl 10 % liquid is sold as Enrofloxyn 10% liquid by "ladygouldianfinch.com " 5319 university drive, suite 629, Irvine, CA.92612 PH. no 800-579-7974. on line without a prescription to all people. They also ship globally. You may try.

Ivomec injectable. Cattle people use Ivomec/noromectin pour-on.

As for ordering the baytril, it doesn't make it thru customs due to it being a controlled substance here.
Wow, just Ivomec? No non-ivermectin paste wormers? I can understand about the Baytril, it's very tightly controlled here, too. Are there any pigeon supply websites in Canada? If so, check those out and see what antibiotics they sell. You can also try to find fish antibiotics - do a search for Cipro, Baytril, Enrofloxyn and Amoxicillin for fish and do the same for pigeons or birds.
