It started off with just one hen, but now a few of them are doing very high pitched squeaky coughs and keeping their beaks open after to breath. also when I pick some of them up when have a gurgling sound in their throats. Does this sound like gapeworm or something else?

It sounds like a respiratory disease to me, such as mycoplasma gallisepticum, infectious bronchitis, coryza, or ILT. ILT will sometimes cause bloody mucus drainage from the beak. Most chicken respiratory diseases are chronic and make carriers of the flock. Here is some reading about those disease: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044
