Hello there,

I'm an all round animal lover have been since I was little. I've worked in a petshop, done various things with cattle and worked at a zoo. I've never lived on a farm though so this move has been exciting. I now have horses ducklings chickens dogs cats and turkeys. Poultry and horses however are very new to me. We got our 5 hens and one turkey hen a few months back. One of those hens turned out to be a roo. We got them and no coop as we free range and they loved the one tree in particular. One night it suddenly started storming and I lost my turkey. We then got 2 new ones in addition to a bantam hen and 5 of her chicks. Owning a backpackers/camping ground a dog staying her accidentally killed the bantam luckily one of her chicks was fairly old and looked after the younger 4. Recently our turkey hen finally let the gobbler mate with her just before dark. That gobbler then got eaten by a fox because for some reason he never went into the tree. So we ran out and got a coop and new gobbler as the hen was constantly calling for her last one and tried to use the rooster as a substitute. Then a couple of days later one of the chicks got killed by a dog accidentally again >:( we locked the turkeys in the coop for a couple of days hoping they would figure out its home but they went for the tree. While a this was we have had 3 hens sitting on eggs. Today one of them hatched and a hen attacked it so me not being able to kill the chick stuck it under heat and have sugar water.. The chick is currently doing well and chirpy very chirpy. It wants to go with the ducklings but they are too big. Oh and I have also been taking my ducklings on earthworm expeditions :D anyway hoped you enjoyed my book hehe

think it's time to consider building a predator proof coop and fenced run for your birds, or you will continually be replacing the "accidentally" dead ones. Brooding hens fare better in private quarters - fenced off so others in the flock won't kill the chicks etc. Perpetually aggressive birds should go to" freezer camp," if they don't mend their ways. There is a lot of info available here for predator proofing, and building coops and runs and how to deal with predators that use your flock as their lunch haven. It doesn't have to be what it is now.
