Main thing is to remember that their digestive system is designed to break down fibrous vegetable matter. They don't need animal based proteins and don't need a lot of corn or even pellets or whatever out of a bag. A good breeder or probably a grower pellet (usually cheaper than breeder) insures some basic nutrition while a big proportion of whole oats will provide that fibrous hull as well as a grain that geese seem to do especially well on. Black oil sunflower provides a whole different kind of fats and oils as compared to corn and while more expensive is thought by many, including animal nutritionists, to be a much better source of fats and energy. Wheat and milo are good for them and enjoyed but if not readily available or affordable they are fine without them. If on a no or poor grazing situation or during the winter carrots, sweet potatoes/yams, pumpkins etc. are all treats that are good for the birds and their nutrition. Leafy greens like endive and kale are very much enjoyed but that can be real pricey for even just a couple of birds. Main thing is to think of how to replace the constant intake of grass that would occur on decent grazing. There's no one right way as long as they aren't expected to thrive for years and years on corn or scratch. Every mouth full of oats helps provide the fiber they otherwise wouldn't be getting.
