Geese eating dirt . . .

Yesterday, I caught all my 10 week old geese around a fresh mole hill, gobbling down the dirt as fast as they could. Now, I don't care about the mole, but I was wondering if this was just geese nibbling on anything possible, or geese short of some vital mineral, or just geese trying to find more stones for their digestion . . . Or possibly I have a rare breed of mole hunting geese . . .

I would go with 'Mole hunting geese' for sure, lol. Our young ones do the same thing. They like dirt I guess.

I think its pretty normal. I've seen my chickens eat dirt, too. Probably just a way to get minerals and grit.

My geese do it too. So now you know you got normal geese, or we all have abnormal geese. Either way, it's okay.

My geese have access to a fresh water clear swimming pool and to a muddy pond. The first thing they do in the morning is climb into the muddy pond and start eating mud. I read somewhere that they filter thing out of it like a whale scooping up big mouthfuls of water and then seining it out. I'm glad to know other's geese eat mud and dirt too!

since I have ducks and geese both I see the differences in how they act, but the geese do some things the same as ducks. my ducks love mud. I flip the kiddie pools over in the mornings and dump the water in the low spots in the yard. the ducks run to it to make mud and dig holes. I have been seeing the geese do this more and more. once in a while they just dig right in and come up with a mouth full. kinda funny to watch. the ducks back wash their filter teeth and they muddy up the pools fast. I haven't seen the geese do that yet.

i agree if u check their pool or wherever they drink water they usually backwash the dirt/mud back into the water i just cleaned the pool this morning and what a huge hassle that was. anyways after i drained all the water there was atleast 3-4 lbs of mud sitting on the bottom i had to rinse it with a hose to get all of it.so that kinda of confirms they dont really eat dirt or mud more or less backwash it for whatever reason.
