We’ve been suspicious about this one for a few weeks. Early wing shape had us convinced she was a lady but then the comb started coming in. Are waddles developing at 6wks a sure sign of being a rooster? We’re in city limits and need to start preparing our 3yo if we need to re-home.

Oh I just caught you said wattles at 6 weeks. No, that's not a sign, neither is wing shape. At six weeks I would expect more comb growth and more red coloring in a cockerel. It would be easier if there were more Buff Orp chicks to compare with.

Right? That’s my problem too. I’ve looked at about a million past gender Id questions but rarely does anyone go back to post the results. Total rookie here, this one was hatched in our daycare after quarantine started, and we got the Brahma that’s in a few of the pictures from a local hatchery to keep it company. We’re planning on keeping them mostly as backyard pets.

And my problem is I haven't had Buff Orp chicks in about 4 years, so I'm really out of practice with sexing this breed! I'm sure someone will come along soon to help you figure it out.

It does look as though it would be a cockerel. This is a sexed cockerel and, they look quite similar, other than maybe the redness in comb and wattles.

That’s why I keep holding out and questioning myself. The comb seems huge, but barely pink at the bottom and still pretty orangey at the top. Also I’m having issues sourcing a replacement chick of a comparable age, so we’re just going to hold onto it until we can find another, and then ‘worst’ case scenario we have 3 chickens instead of the 2 we planned on.
ive already had several contacts on a local poultry swap volunteer to rehome of it is in fact a roo, so there’s a small victory.
