In my town you have to have 3 acres to have chickens and we only have 1. Has anyone tried to change any laws around here?

I know Delafield used to be no chickens and now they allow 5 but must have an acre. To me the laws are kinda silly. If you have no rooster and a couple chickens there shouldn't be a problem. All you can do is go.to city hall and see if you can get it brought up on the agenda.

I agree that limiting ownership based on property size is dumb. For a typical city, saying you need to have 3 acres, or even 1 acre, eliminates nearly everyone within city limits. They might as well tell everyone no chickens allowed, period. Why don't they restrict dog ownership based on lot size?

If you think your city won't budge on changing the ordinance, you could try applying for a zoning variance. But given so many cities around you have changed their ordinances to allow chickens, you might have a fighting chance if you do your research and organize with some others. Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Glendale, and a bunch of other Milwaukee area cities/villages have recently allowed chickens without a restricting lot size requirement. A good place to start your research would be by contacting the Cream City Hens group for advice. Although I did email them during my own research and they never responded. :(

Hi! I also live in Genesee, WI and having the same issue. We don't have 3 acres but want to keep our two. Inspector wants to come over. Very frustrating.
If you want support in changing our ordinance, I'm IN!!
